Ask 100 locals to tell you their favorite Tex-Mex spot, and you’ll likely get 100 answers. Matt’s El Rancho for queso, Maudie’s Tex-Mex for cheese enchiladas, Curra’s Grill for avocado margaritas. You can’t really go wrong with any of them. But ask us, and we’ll send you to Polvos. This Travis Heights institution is where we go to sit on the little patio outside the red stucco building, filling up on chips and salsa while waiting for our fajitas (get the chicken-beef combo, and ask for a mixed stack of flour and corn tortillas) and the enchiladas de la casa al pastor, soaked in spicy guajillo sauce. Drink a few pitchers of frozen margaritas, then consider a second round of nachos. Go with a crowd: Tex-Mex just tastes better with all your rowdy friends.

PRO TIP: Right after you order, go inside and raid the salsa bar, being sure to get some of each.

THE DETAILS: Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
