Au Cheval

Whether brunch or late-night, this West Loop favorite is always perfectly over the top

We’re still not totally sure what Au Cheval’s concept is (it’s sort of a cross between a pub and a diner), but every single thing on the menu is so ridiculously delicious, who cares? The holy grail is the burger: a double stack of griddled patties topped with a sharp Cheddar blend on an airy toasted bun. (You can also get your fix at Small Cheval, the retro, burger-centric spot in Old Town.) Brunch is a madhouse for people who want their Bloody Marys and breakfast IPAs with a side of crispy potato hash, and late night brings in an industry crowd from Restaurant Row. Day or night, Au Cheval’s largely hip-hop reel-to-reel tapes provide an upbeat soundtrack to the gluttony.

PRO TIP: One word: chilaquiles. Available only at brunch and after midnight, i.e., exactly when you’ll need them the most. If you go the burger route, know that a single cheeseburger is actually a double, and a double is a triple. We know.

THE DETAILS: Expect a wait, and bide your time with a cocktail down the block at Lone Wolf.
