Hidden among the skyscrapers and behemoth hotels of the Central Business District is the newly opened Catahoula Hotel, a 35-room charmer set amid the sprawling bones of an old 1840s townhouse purportedly once owned by venerated architect James Gallier. The fresh, creative design of the tiny, well-priced rooms makes them feel cozy without being cramped. Casper mattresses, rainfall showerheads, and free Wi-Fi provide comfort without fussiness. The atmospheric pisco bar (complete with piano) near the entrance serves a simple Peruvian menu. In summer, wind your way up the twisting townhouse staircases, balconies, and courtyards, past the former stable, and stretch out by the pool and tiki bar.

PRO TIP: Book the Master Bedroom, with a private balcony over Union Street and in-room personal bar.

THE DETAILS: Rooms from $199.
