GO HERE: to understand why some of the city’s best restaurants have Mme. Barthélemy’s cheeses on their carts. Nicole Barthélemy has been in business for almost 50 years and has no intention to retire. Her shop is a master’s degree in French cheese, organized by milk type and style, with the selection of goat cheese being particularly deep.

GET: whatever they tell you is best right now, adding a jar of jam, some honey, and a bottle of wine from the shelves.

THE VIBE IS: classic Parisian. All you need is a baguette and some chicken feet sticking out of your wheelie cart.

PRACTICAL STUFF: Open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
