Watch the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest of 1957

A mild winter made this year's pasta crop especially bountiful (according to this 1957 hoax)

On April 1, 1957, the British TV news show Panorama decided to splice its normal newscast with a little April Fool's coverage of the Swiss spaghetti harvest. Many British viewers, surprisingly, didn't catch on to the gag. According to BoingBoing, where this video recently popped up:

It's thought that this was the first televised April Fool's Day hoax, and it became one of the most famous. You can read the whole story of how it was aired (and believed) over at BoingBoing. And keep an eye out for fresh fettuccine and lasagna at the farmers' markets this weekend--we hear late October is prime harvest season for the flatter pastas.
