A Recent History of Food-Fashion Mashups, in 17 Looks

To debut his Fall 2014 collection, Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld recently dispatched models to stroll beneath the soaring ceilings of Paris's Grand Palais, stomping on their stilettos and plucking Eau de Chanel–emblazoned water bottles and plastic-wrapped purses marked "100-percent lamb" off rows of assembled shelves. These models were not walking the runway; they were grocery shopping—Chanel-branded sunglasses, coats, mayonnaise, and all. And for the rest of Paris Fashion Week, spare boxes of Coco Puffs replaced clutches in the hands of the street-fashion-savvy, while everyone else cursed the precedent Lagerfeld had set for appropriate grocery-store attire.

This was only the latest in a long-stretching runway of food and fashion mash-ups, two realms that toe the line between luxury and necessity—we must eat, as we must wear clothes, but some do it better than others. So it's only be expected that the two should collide in luxury grocery stores and gluttonous window displays, in dresses made of meat, cabbage, peas, and cheese, in all the edible collaborations between food and fashion that follow here.
