We've posted before about some of the advanced food research that the U.S. Army is doing, but a BBC show actually went to Georgia's Fort Benning to take a look at some new (well, old) sandwiches that can keep fresh in their packaging for years.

The show, called "After Life: The Strange Science of Decay," won't let us embed the video, but you can click through to it here. Our favorite part is probably how out-of-place the kindly, bearded British man seems at Fort Benning:

The sandwich stuff is interesting, too. Its development involved some compromises between dehydration and the science of jams and jellies to make something super-shelf-stable and actually edible.
