I'm usually up by about 5:30 or 6:00. We have a four-year-old and a six-week-old, and that's about as late as you can sleep with those children in the house. So I wake up, march my daughter to the kitchen, and she pounds down some Rice Krispies while my wife makes the coffee for both of us.
Every day, I like to convince myself that I can drink my coffee black, but I always end up caving and using cream and sugar. Because it tastes better. But you want to be that cool person who drinks their coffee black.
Breakfast is like my diet portion of the day, because I still have my self control about me. It's usually something like two hard-boiled eggs and yogurt, or a bowl of bran cereal with low-fat milk. It's the monk diet breakfast. But the rest of the day is a slow and steady descent into emotional eating. By the end of the night, it's full-on ice cream and self destruction.
Then, at like 11:30, it's California kale smoothie time. I'm a four-meal-a-day person: breakfast at 8, kale smoothies at 11:30, lunch around 2--just leftovers or a salad or something--and then dinner around 6. The kale smoothie is just kale, some non-fat Greek yogurt, frozen bananas, and coconut water. I make a huge one of those for me, my daughter, my wife, and whoever else is living here. We basically run a boarding house--there's always someone staying over.
One of my favorite things in the world is blended-up anchovies on pizza. But, weirdly, one of the things I cannot f**king stand is eating an anchovy on a cracker. It's the same form of food, but in one form, it's my favorite, and in another form, I'll seriously throw up if I have to eat it. I'm very emotional with food, and pizza for me is 1983: I'm just getting out of the swimming pool, I'm six years old, and my life is stretching ahead of me.
One of the big things I've learned working on a lot of low-budget productions is that if you're not paying people, you'd better f**king feed them well. Even though we only had like fifteen crew members on Your Sister's Sister, we had two people dedicated to cooking at all times. It makes such a difference. After shooting, we would have these big family-style feasts in one of the houses we were using on this beautiful island off the coast of Seattle. We would go over what we did that day and plan for tomorrow. It's what I always imagined [John] Cassavetes would do with his family--hanging out, eating good food.
Anyway, back in my house, it's "special treat time" after dinner. My daughter gets to pick something from The Owl. It's this cookie jar in the form of an owl that's full of candy. She pounds out the special treats in there, and I try to hold off, because you know, I'm on camera now. I have to try to maintain my womanly figure. But I definitely end up caving.
