Here on the east coast the weather is truly frightful--snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, and just general grimness and gloom. As one transplanted west coast friend said to me recently, being snowed in has made her a little more sympathetic toward the Jack Nicholson character in The Shining. And if you're a cook, the realization that there will be nothing green in season for months is just depressing. My solution? Fake it. Start an indoor garden and just pretend it's May. I love the simple, utilitarian gardens-in-a-bag from Potting Shed Creations. Just plant the seeds in the bag (which contains organic soil and coconut husk drainage chips), add water, and with a little sunshine and TLC you'll soon be growing basil, parsley, oregano, cilantro, sage, mint, chives, thyme, dill, lavender, or--my favorite--alpine strawberries. Pets feeling a little down? They also have catnip, cat grass (wheat) and dog grass (barley).
