The design
This lightweight silicone colander collapses to 1 inch thick for convenient storage.
Testing Notes:
The cone shape allowed for fast, efficient draining. Silicone is heat-resistant up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and the large, 9-inch-diameter colander fits nicely over pots to safely steam and boil food. $30; available at Bed Bath & Beyond; 800-462-3966 for stores
The Design
Innovative in its versatility, this 5-quart colander can convert from a traditional footed version to a useful over-the-sink one. At nearly 16 inches long, it fits across most sinks. Available in stainless steel or plastic.
Testing Notes:
The fold-out, non-slip legs are easy to move, and they also act as handles when they're folded down. The extra-large bowl doesn't crowd delicate berries and quickly drains everything from long noodles to wide, crinkly cabbage leaves. $30; oxo.com
The Design
The 31/2 quart colander is made from 100 percent recycled plastic. It comes in four colors, and the holes are patterned to loosely resemble a strawberry.
Testing Notes:
Though made from recycled material, this one is sturdier and thicker than others. Dishwasher-safe, it doesn't retain odors or stains from fruit and had no problem with steaming-hot pasta. Has grippable handles and a raised base. $13; available at Whole Foods Markets; wholefoods.com for stores
