Discover the Most Popular Donuts in America
Released on 11/24/2015
First thing is that people just really love doughnuts.
[Man] What's the thing you researched?
To try to get into what actually describes
a great doughnut and pulled out a lot of descriptive words.
In this particular graph, we've plotted the average score
for a given type of doughnut on the y-axis
and the popularity of that kind of doughnut
by frequency of mention is how often people eat it
on the x-axis.
This is from people reviewing the doughnuts
they have eaten on the web.
The cake doughnuts are highly rated,
average of just over 4.0, and very popular.
But the most popular is actually cider doughnuts,
which I've only ever seen around the autumn time.
But if you wanted to pick a doughnut
that was a solid, good doughnut, glazed,
chocolate, and/or cake doughnuts are really
how you wanna go.
[Man] Then what?
So, wanted to look at whether there was a geographic bias
in the way that people rate their doughnuts, so,
this is from pictures people have taken and tagged
with doughnuts on the social web.
What we actually see when we do this is a bias
towards the east coast.
[Man] So, you figured out it's on the east coast.
So, then what?
So, then, it's really a matter of finding doughnut venues
that give you that solid cake, glazed,
or chocolate doughnut experience.
The top one is Dough in Brooklyn.
[Man] That's not a surprise.
I've been to Dough, it's amazing.
People really love to be enthusiastic about doughnuts.
Which is pretty cheerful when you think about it.
Doughnuts should make you happy.
