Borough Market
GO HERE: to browse (and eat your way through) the city’s oldest produce and artisanal food market, at the foot of London Bridge. Start early with coffee and toast at Monmouth Coffee Company (the creamy Jersey milk makes for an exceptional cappuccino), then cry a little at the sight of all of those big, beautiful wheels of cheese at Neal’s Yard Dairy before hitting the street-food stalls and surrounding restaurants.
GET THE: doughnuts at Bread Ahead; pasta at Padella; coffee and toast at Monmouth Coffee Company; Indian food at Gujarati Rasoi; cheese toasties at Kappacasein. Basically, if there’s a line, you want to be waiting in it.
THE VIBE IS: friendly and fairly slow-paced, if overwhelmingly crowded at times.
PRACTICAL STUFF: Full market Wednesday to Saturday. (Limited market Monday and Tuesday.) Open Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s best to show up around midday.
