GO HERE: for a bang-up British meal in an 1860s-era workers’ eating house that’s very Ye Olde England—with preindustrial (and slightly punishing) pew-like benches, mahogany wainscoting and a checkerboard tile floor. Rich, salty, meaty, mouthwatering dishes come on mismatched china and are meant to be shared. This incarnation of the restaurant feels very 1960s, but actually hails from 2012.

ORDER THE: mince on dripping toast with dressed watercress, which always remains (for good reason) on the daily-changing menu. Share that and the smoked cod roe with cured egg yolk if it’s available.

THE VIBE IS: on its face, very Oliver Twist, yet the service is warm and generous (which can feel extraordinary in a London context). The crowd’s an unusual mix of regulars and employees from the neighborhood's many media agencies and startups.

PRACTICAL STUFF: at lunch you can get away with walking in; for dinner you’re safer with a reservation, made online a few days in advance. Open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturday, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday is lunch only, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
