GO HERE: for a home base coffee shop in Coyoacán, the historically bohemian and quiet residential neighborhood that was once the home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. This place serves expert French press and espresso drinks using Mexican beans from Atoyac, Guerrero.

ORDER THE: Moka, which gets its chocolate boost from a square of Oaxacan chocolate dropped into the drink.

THE VIBE IS: Austere, with white brick walls and sans serif fonts. But the staff is disarmingly friendly and many of its chatty patrons camp out for the day with laptops.

PRACTICAL STUFF: During the week, Cafe El Negro is full of students; the weekends are calmer. Open from Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
