GO HERE: for the chicest property from the popular hotel chain Grupo Habita. In a city with such spectacular architecture, there are few converted-mansion hotels, so Hotel Downtown stands out. It comprises the top two floors of a 17th century Count’s palace, which now houses two fantastic restaurants (Azul Histórico and Puntarena), a mezcalería (La Bótica), and two floors of stylish shops and galleries. The 17 rooms are spare but spacious and sexy, with double-height ceilings and decor that merges indigenous materials with cutting-edge minimalism.

GET THE: “Independence” or “Revolution” suites. A rooftop bar and pool offer views of the historic neighborhood.

THE VIBE IS: discreet and regal, thanks to the tropical-wood furniture from U.S.-born, Mexico-bred midcentury designer Don Shoemaker.

PRACTICAL STUFF: Rooms start around $250, though there are frequent sales. The smallest rooms are a generous 270 square feet but feel bigger because of those high ceilings.
