Pecan or pumpkin pie? That might just be the most controversial question in our new video series, "You're Welcome with Adam Rapoport," in which our editor in chief answers all your questions about entertaining. For this inaugural episode, Rapoport tackles the eternal conundrum: What should I bring?

  1. You can bring wine, as long as you don't make the host feel obliged to serve it straight away. (And hosts: If you're going to ask your guests to bring wine, be specific!)

  2. For extra guest points, skip the wine in favor of a nice bag of coffee for the next morning, or a loaf of good bread and a jar of mayonnaise for next-day sandwiches.

  1. Speaking of sandwiches: If you're going to make sandwiches with your leftovers (and you should), it's gotta be on white bread with iceberg lettuce and a ridiculous amount of mayonnaise.

  2. Yes, you should dress up—that might mean something different to you than it does to Mom, but whatever you do, make an effort.

  1. Pregame—but not too hard.

  2. Pecan or pumpkin pie? (This one's gonna get real.)

  3. You should absolutely make a toast.
