Google released its Zeitgeist data this year, in which it tells us the spirit of our times based on things people type into Google. And they have food categories!
The top three restaurants for U.S. searches are all pizza places--Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa Johns, all in that order. Makes sense, since all three let you order pizza online, but the weirder one is Starbucks at #4. Why are people googling Starbucks?
They've also assembled a list of the year's "Fastest Rising Diets," which includes all sorts of things that we've thankfully never heard of (and that we at Bon Appetit work diligently to never mention). Dukan Diet? Four Hour and 17 Day Diet? African Mango?!
Our favorite, though, is the list of most-Googled recipes for the U.S. (which isn't on the website, as far as we can tell, but we're not bloggers for nothing):
- chicken
- meatloaf
- banana bread
- chili
- pancake
- lasagna
- pork chop
- guacamole
- cupcakes
- cream cheese frosting
Never change, you beautiful, bland-but-delicious food-loving nation. And may all of your chickens be cream cheese frosted, from sea to shining sea.
