Last week, we ran through a list of all the possible benefits that Apple's new smartphone might bring to the tech-enabled diner. But we forgot to mention one possible downside: that expensive phone (and more expensive data plan) might just take a huge bite out of your food budget.
According to new statistics from the Labor Department, household spending on cell phones has shot up in the past few years while spending on clothes, entertainment, and (most importantly) eating out have all dropped. As the WSJ reports, more and more people are doing away with their meals out of the house as a direct effect of their pricey data plans:
Sad stuff. The day might come soon when we just sit in our homes, look at digitally manipulated pictures of food on our phones, and chow down on Costco nutrition pellets instead of going to restaurants. Who needs food when you've got data?
