Three Ways to Eat Crickets
Released on 06/23/2015
Today we are eating.
It's a freaking cricket.
Crickets.
Cricket snacks, cricket cookies, and cricket cupcakes.
Crickets.
So Jim, I don't know if you've noticed
but crickets are hopping up everywhere.
I've been reading about all of them in food blogs.
Calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin.
Yeah riboflavin.
Crickets have a ton of nutritional benefits
and it's a sustainable food source.
Just look at it.
For those of you who are not on board
with eating bug bodies yet,
start with cricket snacks.
This company called Bitty,
they make cookies out of crickets.
What if there was like a cricket body just stuck in here
and I ate it.
I don't even want to think about it.
This tastes like a cookie.
It tastes like a cookie.
We have protein bars. Alright Jimmy.
I'm gonna have the Thai Bar Okay.
Cause I'm Asian.
Coconut, Ginger, and Lime.
I got the Chacho, peanut butter and chocolate.
Interesting smell.
You know if you took cricket off of this,
I would totally eat it and not know the difference.
So these are called Crick-ettes.
Interesting. How cute.
It's the other green meat, in case you guys didn't know.
(laughing)
What's the first green meat? Hilarious slogan.
We have three different flavors here,
one of them is bacon and cheese.
So I got sour cream and onion,
Ashley over here has salt and vinegar.
Thank God. It's like a sunflower seed!
Oh wait, that's a leg.
I think I just chewed an eyeball.
Okay so we've conquered the snack portion
of our cricket challenge today.
We're gonna move on to the second part,
and we're gonna make some cupcakes.
Yeah.
So I'm just gonna use my regular cupcake recipe.
We're gonna replace the all purpose with cricket flour.
We're using one and 3/4ths cup of cricket flour.
A fourth a tablespoon of salt,
some evaporated milk.
Last but not least we'll add this vanilla in
and six tablespoons of butter.
Let's dish it out.
Let's do it.
How deep should I fill these guys up?
I like an ice cream scoop,
it's almost like the perfect amount.
It's way more efficient than what I'm doing.
And it looks like we'll have just enough
to fill up twelve cupcakes.
Perfect.
We'll just pop these in the oven
and see what happens.
Okay so they're out of the oven
and they've cooled,
and they look pretty good they turned out really well right?
So what are we gonna do to decorate?
It's not enough that there's crickets inside of them,
we're gonna put crickets on top of them.
Candy crickets.
So this is a standard buttercream frosting.
Ashley's much better at this than I am, and it's beautiful.
So what do you think?
I'll do one for you.
Ashley's prepared all sorts of green candies.
Yes, our little laces will be the legs
we cut some licorice twists into wedges to make the
The drumsticks.
The drumsticks!
And these Skittles slash M&M's are heads right?
Right.
Put my little cricket on there,
hello cricket.
A head for you buddy.
There it is.
The drumsticks on a cricket
are more towards the middle to the front of their bodies.
These look so cute,
no one's gonna even care what's inside them.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Tastes like a cupcake.
So out of the three ways we tried crickets today
I would definitely say cupcakes take the cake.
And let us know in the comments
which way you guys would prefer if you had the choice.
And don't forget to subscribe to the Bon Appetit
Youtube channel.
No crickets were harmed in the making of this episode
minus this giant bowl of dead crickets next to me.
