Little Chefs Big Meals: A Day on the Farm With Suzanne Goin
Released on 08/09/2013
I'm Suzanne Goin and we're at Coleman Farms
about an hour and a half north of LA.
It's just amazing to get up this morning and leave LA
and in 45 minutes you have the ocean on one side
and the hills on the other side and then be
in this rolling hills and oak trees and horses
and all kinds of stuff just really feeling like you're
in a different world, like old California.
That's what it feels like to me.
When we showed up, Bill Coleman's in there peeling garlic
and his wife's cleaning greens
and the kids are running around.
The one thing about kids is they love pulling things up.
All of our radishes we have in one afternoon.
In like five minutes they're all up out of the ground,
so they love that.
Fennel's good, it gets a little more of a struggle.
I mean, this has always been my life,
so it's kind of always been my kids' life.
I mean, we don't go that often
but they've definitely been to farms.
We have a little garden in our house.
That idea of this is where the stuff comes from,
when it comes time to eat it all,
it all makes sense to them.
It's not just some random scary thing
that they don't understand.
It's like, Oh yeah. That's that thing that I saw.
The other good thing about bringing kids to a farm
is for them to, one, see how it happens and then also,
I don't know when I'm at a farm I'm always like,
How do you only charge $1.50 for a head of lettuce?
I think it's cool too to learn, you know,
they're around David and I all the time
and they know how passionate we are
about what we do but to learn other people
have other passions about other things.
I love having my kids turned on to people
or see people who do what they love
and make their life of it.
I think it's good inspiration for them.
