With every new year comes a barrage of new year trend predictions. Will it finally happen? Will Jell-O finally make a comeback? Sorry, nope. Not this year. Your January horoscope is a food trend prediction for 2019, the buzzwords and highly specific ingredients that for some reason, are about to sell like cauliflower rice hotcakes. Look out! Here they come.

In 2019, you’ll be feeling extra adventurous. Yes, more than usual, Aries. Maybe that means ziplining across the Grand Canyon, or putting on that one-act play told from the perspective of your cat. Don’t discount your brilliant ideas, this is your year to go for it, whatever it is, no matter how strange it might sound to anyone else. That’s why your food trend prediction is the wild pursuit of the alt-est alt milks. You thought oat milk was a stretch? In 2019, alternative milks are pushing the boundaries of space and time with innovations such as “tree milk,” “kidney bean milk,” “kangaroo milk” (imported from Australia) and something we’re looking forward to having in our latte: “whiskey milk.”

While you are usually as steady as they come, 2019 is your year to become the bull in the china shop, so to speak. It’s time to give life to those inherent talents and desires you’ve previously tucked under the rug. A sudden restlessness gives you the energy to do the unthinkable: take risks. Sure, we mean in your career and artistic endeavors and romantic life and all that, but also in your kitchen. Your food trend prediction is a rise in fermenting everything. Think lacto-fermented tap water, and koji-coated hot Cheetos. We hear people are experimenting with something called ZourKraut (pickled Zours candies) and kombuched olives. We hear.

In 2019, you’ll find that the company you keep inspires and exhilarates you. Someone might even give your butterflies (#swoon.) Your food trend prediction for the year is just as inspiring: be on the lookout for flower flavors. Everywhere you turn it’ll be rose-this and chrysanthemum that. Juiced sunflowers, jasmine ice cream (we hear it’s an aphrodisiac), and squash blossom Laffy Taffys are all possibilities. Who knows, maybe that pastry chef’s dream of corpse flower-infused cotton candy can finally hit the menu in 2019, knocking out all diners within a 500-feet radius with its repulsive, enthralling odor. Who really knows?

You’ve been taking good care of yourself and you’re proud of the changes you made. It shows! We can’t see you but we’re pretty sure you’re glowing. Be unapologetically bold in 2019, like the upcoming trend of healthier popsicles and frozen treats. Personally, we can’t wait for brussels sprout sorbet, green juice gelato, and frozen cauliflower custard. Turmeric and black pepper Dippin’ Dots? At least you know you’re living your best life.

Expect 2019 to be a celebration! The work will still be there in the morning, so why not live a little. This new diet...ish has people eating fruits, vegetables, seeds—all kinds of crazy foods from this natural world. Not much else tho. “The next big thing!” “Sounds like torture!” “Unclear where peas come in!” are what we’re hearing from critics who saw the previews. We’re on the edge of our seats.

It’s your year, Sagittarius, so no need to tone it down. Add an extra scoop of gusto to everything you get your hands on, which might be a shopping cart full of collagen-pumped foods. You thought that milkshake was just a milkshake? Guess again. In 2019 everything that can, will contain a squirt of collagen. It’ll appeal to your bone density and skin elasticity, and it’ll be expensive. Be on the lookout for collagen-infused ketchup, mustard, and mayo. Why not? Marketers are pushing it as a meat alternative with fibrous fruity jerky, “vegan pulled pork,” as well as using it as an alt-sugar. A fruit and a meat? You’re eager to figure this out. Next up?
