How to Buy, Store, and Cook with Oranges, In Season in December
While you're (probably) freezing this winter, think about the oranges that are basking in the sunshine down south. These citrusy fruits have a tendency to brighten things up, after all, whether they're simply peeled and eaten, squeezed into vinaigrette, or supremed and tossed into a salad. They're one of the few—but great!—fruits that are in season in the cold months. We like to think of them as Mother Nature's way of saying thanks for putting up with all that snow-and-ice nonsense.

How to buy
Look for oranges that are heavy for their size and have vibrant, firm skin. Brownish, rough places on the skin are okay (this is known as russeting), but avoid fruit with wrinkles and bruises.
How to store
Store oranges on the counter for 2–3 days, or for up to 2 weeks wrapped in plastic in the refrigerator.
