Like the month of September, which is somewhere between summer and fall, ginger can't be pinned down to one season. And why would you want it to be? It matches equally well with sunny, refreshing dishes (like in a lemon-spiked frozen yogurt)and warm, spicy ones (cookies). We even chop it up, throw it in a mug, and steep it in boiling water for cold-fighting ginger tea. Good thing this sinus-clearing root is in season now—you'll need it before you know it

HOW TO BUY
Look for firm ginger with smooth skin that isn't wrinkled, which can indicate dryness and age. Ginger should have a fresh, spicy aroma.
HOW TO STORE
You can leave ginger at room temperature for up to 5 days, or wrap it tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. To store it longer, wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months.
