Carbonated mixers are an easy way to elevate the everyday drink. At every cocktail party, there are those people who only drink X spirit with X soda, a.k.a., a highball. Lift their liquor beyond the average airplane Gin and Tonic with a quality mixer.

Here are our five essential mixers and the drinks they were made for:

BLENHEIM OLD #3 HOT GINGER ALE Spicy, thanks to real ginger, the Blenheim with a red cap (pictured above) is the boldest. Use in a Moscow Mule, Dark and Stormy, or Presbyterian.

Q TONIC Not all tonics are created equal (or made with Peruvian quinine). For the crispest Gin and Tonic ever, try this Brooklyn-made brew.

CANADA DRY CLUB SODA This iconic brand is known for its tiny, intense bubbles. Look for 10-oz.bottles, which are perfect for making three drinks. Use in Fizzes or Vodka Sodas.

COCA-COLA Only one cola will do when it comes to making classic Cuba Libres or Jack and Cokes. If you come across Mexican Coke, made with cane sugar, hoard it.

FEVER-TREE BITTER LEMON Like a sparkling, super-sour lemonade, this a great match for tequila or vodka.
