The Best Herbs for Sunburn, Bug Bites, and Other Casualties of Summer
It feels as though we yearn for summer at least eight months out of the year, but, when it finally gets here, we remember all the small annoyances that come with it: excessive humidity (that feels the worst on NYC subway platforms), sunburn, bug bites, and muscle soreness from all the outdoor activity we're suddenly inspired to do. Instead of reaching for the chemical-ridden sprays and salves, why not turn to the plants that are already in our kitchens and gardens?
The word “herbalism” is popping up everywhere these days, but the practice of using plants for healing is nothing new. Ahead are five herbs that will be your saving graces this summer, for everything from sunburn to poison ivy to that frosé hangover.

1/5Comfrey for Sore Muscles
When you’ve been playing hard with your friends at the park all day and wake up the next day with sore muscles, reach for Comfrey.
What it does: The roots and leaves contain natural compounds that reduce inflammation, ease pain, and stimulate the growth of new skin cells
Do it yourself: Put a few drops of the essential oil in coconut or jojoba oil to make a salve to spread all over the targeted area

When you’ve had too much to drink at the rooftop happy hour the day before, reach for lemongrass.
What it does: An energizing antioxidant for when you’re feeling sluggish. Also great for improving digestion and circulation.
Do it yourself: Steep the plant in hot water and drink as a tea for muscle cramps or add a few drops of the essential oil to your body wash or shampoo for a boost in your morning shower

When you’re itching like crazy from insect bites or poison ivy, give peppermint a go.
What it does: This perfectly cooling herb can be used to target inflammation and itchiness.
Do it yourself: Mince it on salads, blend into smoothies, or mix a few drops of the essential oil into your lotion for a cooling topical cream. You can also put a few drops of the essential oil around the edges of your living area to get rid of any unwanted pests. Use it in soap when washing on a warm day, as the herb’s cooling effects will last even after you get out of the shower.

When you spent a few too many hours frolicking on the beach, rosehip is there for you.
What it does: A great antioxidant, and perfect to slather on your face after a day in the hot sun to even skin tone and enhance facial hydration
Do it yourself: Add a splash of rosewater to an iced tea or smoothie, or make rosewater + rose petal ice cubes to add into your summer cocktails. Rosehip essential oil can also be applied directly to the skin, but since it has such a thin consistency, it’s best to add a few drops to your regular facial moisturizing cream for even application

When you’ve gone from your bike to your job to happy hour to a party, and your face now has that filter called “sweat," calendula is your friend.
What it does: With its natural antiseptic properties, calendula is great for preventing acne. It also has compounds that fight bacteria to prevent infection, speed up healing, and reduce scarring. Its hydrating properties also make it great for combatting sunburn and itchy skin/scalp
Do it yourself: Steep the flowers in hot water for a tea and then either drink it, wash your face with it, or use a cotton pad to apply directly to pimples. Or put a few drops of the essential oil in coconut or jojoba oil to make a salve to spread all over your skin and hair
