Bike share programs have changed the way I consume a city—literally. Yes, lots of people talk about how more bikes means fewer cars on the road, which leads to a whole bunch of positives for the planet (they are not wrong!). And more cyclists rolling around downtowns makes places like Pittsburgh and Portland, OR feel a little bit like Copenhagen or Amsterdam—which, in my book, is a very good thing. But the best part about bike shares is that it has transformed the way I do my job. Instead of Uber-ing from restaurant to restaurant during one of my city food binges, wondering how I can possibly stomach another bite, I can ride a bike and burn calories and get hungry again—a precious feeling when your job is to pretty much to eat as much as you can. I don’t expect you to eat seven meals a day like me, but the next time you find yourself in a city with a bike share program, use it to go to lunch from your hotel. Next thing you know, you’ll be biking all over town and eating as much as you want. But not all cities are created equal when it comes to cycling around town (hello, hilly San Francisco). Right now in my book, there’s no better place bike than Washington, D.C., where the city’s restaurant scene is booming... and the roads are, thankfully, flat.
