Marinara, the classic Italian tomato sauce, is seasoned with garlic, onion, and oregano. Red pepper flakes and other herbs may also be added.
There's no shame in using store-bought marinara, but do read the label. Store-bought sauce that comes in a jar, or sauce made by a specialty foods store (usually packaged in a plastic takeout container) can be an excellent time-saving option. Look for as few ingredients as possible other than tomatoes and basic seasonings. Also, avoid sauces that have sugar or corn syrup listed as a main ingredient.
Quick marinara is a snap to make yourself and you can season it as you like. In a deep skillet, sauté some chopped onion and minced garlic in a few tablespoons of olive oil, red pepper flakes, and a sprig or two of basil or rosemary, or both are good additions, too). When the onion is soft and translucent, add a can of plum tomatoes in puree and a few pinches of dried oregano, and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes. Fish out the herb sprigs before using the sauce.
